TSA launches Gateside by PreCheck pilot at LAX for non-traveling guests

LOS ANGELES — The Transportation Security Administration has launched Gateside by TSA PreCheck, a pilot that lets eligible non-travelers clear PreCheck lanes and enter post-security areas at Los Angeles International Airport and 12 other airports, the agency and reporting from The Desert Sun / The Californian said.

The program was announced Sept. 2, 2026, according to The Californian. TSA said Gateside provides a special authorization for people eligible for PreCheck screening to go beyond the checkpoint even when they are not flying, using the same dedicated PreCheck lanes and a Known Traveler Number to apply.

TSA said Gateside is the only way non-travelers can reach post-security areas while using PreCheck lanes. Airline gate passes and airport visitor programs still require standard screening lanes, the agency said.

Uses cited by TSA include meeting family or friends at a gate for welcomes and sendoffs, joining someone on a long layover, visiting dining and retail beyond the checkpoint, and greeting service members returning from deployment.

Applicants must request a Gateside pass at least one day before a planned visit and no more than three days in advance, TSA said. Passes are valid for one calendar day, and re-entry is allowed that day. Availability may be limited during peak travel times, and each participating airport sets daily pass limits, the agency said.

There is no extra fee for Gateside beyond TSA PreCheck enrollment, TSA and The Californian reported. The Californian said PreCheck enrollment typically costs between $76 and $85, is good for five years, and is free in some cases, and that PreCheck members wait about 10 minutes or less on average and can leave electronics and small liquids in bags and keep belts and light jackets on.

Who can apply: TSA said Gateside is available to people who can access PreCheck screening through TSA PreCheck membership, certain federal employees, and other trusted traveler programs. The Californian likewise said PreCheck members and people with Known Traveler Numbers can apply. Children may join a parent or guardian if their names are entered with the “add visitor” option, TSA said.

How to apply, per TSA: go to the Gateside application flow (The Californian cited tsa.gov/gateside-login), create or log in to a login.gov account, enter personal information in the application portal, submit the request, and check the dashboard for approval status. At the airport, visitors go to TSA PreCheck lanes with an acceptable ID such as a Real ID or passport. Screenshots or printouts of approval status are not accepted; visitors may need to show the live portal dashboard on a mobile device, especially if children are on the reservation, TSA said. Personal information entered must exactly match the PreCheck application, including name, date of birth, and KTN, or a request may be denied, the agency said.

Visitors cannot use TSA PreCheck Touchless ID lanes for Gateside, TSA said. If PreCheck lanes are closed, a TSA officer may direct visitors to a standard lane. Visitors are subject to the same screening requirements and limits as ticketed passengers and to airport conduct rules and federal security regulations; violations can lead to being asked to leave, pass revocation, or civil or criminal penalties, TSA said. Those without acceptable ID may verify identity with TSA ConfirmID, which carries a $45 fee, the agency said.

California airports in the initial launch include Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and San Diego International Airport (SAN), according to TSA and The Californian. TSA listed 13 airports in the initial phase and said the program will expand to more airports in coming months. (One TSA FAQ on the same page refers to 14 airports in the initial phase; the agency’s published participating list names 13.)

LAX service worker and Lennox man charged after fentanyl found in airport bathroom

By The Southbound 105 LOS ANGELES — An employee of a service provider at Los Angeles International Airport and another Lennox resident have been charged in a federal criminal complaint with possessing about 11 kilograms (24.3 pounds) of fentanyl found in an airport bathroom and intended for transport on a Minnesota-bound flight, Argonaut News reported, citing a Justice Department announcement. Miguel Angel Tuz-Noh, 24, of Lennox, who works at LAX, and Anthony Olvera, 23, also of Lennox, are charged with possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, according to Argonaut News. Both defendants were arrested Aug. 19 and made their initial appearances Aug. 21 in U.S. District Court in downtown Los Angeles, the newspaper reported.
