By The Southbound 105 SOUTH GATE, Calif. — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has begun cleanup at a contaminated industrial site in South Gate known as the Southern Avenue Industrial Area Superfund site, LAist reported Aug. 25. EPA officials leading the effort broke ground Tuesday on soil remediation at the long-empty property, according to LAist. The agency estimates soil cleanup will take about two months. Groundwater cleanup planning is expected to start in 2027 and could take a year or more. The overall effort is estimated to cost between $45 million and $60 million, primarily through federal dollars, LAist reported. The small southeast Los Angeles County city was built on industry and boomed in the early 20th century with auto, chemical and other manufacturers. TSA said Gateside provides a special authorization for people eligible for PreCheck screening to go beyond the checkpoint even when they are not flying, using the same dedicated PreCheck lanes and a Known Traveler Number to apply. Miguel Angel Tuz-Noh, 24, of Lennox, who works at LAX, and Anthony Olvera, 23, also of Lennox, are charged with possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, according to Argonaut News. Both defendants were arrested Aug. 19 and made their initial appearances Aug. 21 in U.S. District Court in downtown Los Angeles, the newspaper reported.  Watts Towers Arts Center campus renovation scheduled to break ground in October A $22 million renovation project of the Watts Towers Arts Center Campus is scheduled to begin in October, the first major upgrade to this historical site since 1970, Artform and Urbanize L.A have reported.  The work is planned to add more than 30,000 square feet of park space along E.107st, shade and seating at the amphitheater, walkways, public art, and add 200 trees on the 5 acre campus at 1727 E.107st. Completion is aimed at before the 2028 L.A Olympics. Funding includes a $10 million donation from the Bezos Earth Fund through the Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust, plus state park and budget money.
